Jan Zizka

First medieval historical character I have ever painted - Jan Zizka, famous XV century Czech mercenary and brilliant tactician implementing Wagenburg (war wagon) tactics during Hussite Wars (1419-1434). He is thought to have lost one of his eyes during battle of Grunwald in 1410.

The miniature itself is a conversion based on Zvezda knight, with DDS Landsknecht head and mace from Miniart Hussite set. The eyepatch is scratch build. I painted him in red and white, with red crayfish on the shield based on Zizka family coat of arms. I guess that's it, enjoy the photos.

Thanks for reading!

  1. That's a very well thought-out and executed conversion and the painting is wonderful. The shield is great, did you paint it freehand?.

    1. Thanks! Crayfish on the shield was hand-painted as I absolutely hate using shield transfers or decals.

    1. Thanks Phil! According to Czech version of Wikipedia Zizka's crayfish coat of arms is dated back to 1378, which is close enough for me to assume it would be used durring Hussite Wars.

    2. You're probably right. The Hussite war seems well documented, I suppose you can verify what you read on wikipedia (or follow the links that any serious article contains).
